Art's Business Law course is based on practicalities and real street knowledge.

Art was a founding partner of the Victoria law firm Cook Roberts in 1970, following his working for 4 years with Buell Ellis in Vancouver.

Specializing in Business, Commercial and Corporate Law during his 33 year career as a practising lawyer, he was favoured with instructions from many long-term clients in various businesses.

He served on the Commercial Appeals Commission for 10 years, being its Chair from 1987 to 1991.

His Q.C. designation was received in 1988.

Art retired as a partner in Cook Roberts December 31, 2001 to Associate Counsel with the firm, and has recently given up his desk completely.

Art assisted in establishing the Business Law Clinic at the UVic Law School, and he has lectured and mentored law students and articling lawyers. He has also taught Business Law at Camosun College.

He obtained his BComm and LLB degrees at the University of British Columbia. He has since taken Continuing Legal Education courses in Commercial and Corporate law and Income Tax in B.C. and at the Banff School of Management.

Art's community service has included: past president of United Way of Greater Victoria, a former director of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C./Yukon and a former director of the Q.A. Children's Hospital; and as a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society and the Vancouver Island Cancer Centre, and Ducks Unlimited and the Braefoot Community Association.

He has considerable pride in both his son Rick (B.A.- English and B.Ed., from UBC) and his daughter Jennifer (B.A. and M.A.-Canadian History from UVic). Art's hobbies include peaceful ocean kayaking, skiing and working out, and not-so-peaceful golfing.
