Tom has been an organizational change management consultant and has been a successful manager and administrator in both the private and public sectors. Since 1998 TJM Services clients have included the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the Department of National Defense, the BC Ministry of Transportation and the Canadian Centre for Management Development. Prior to 1998 while in the public sector (federal) he was an administrator with Canada Immigration, Human Resources Development Canada and the Department of National Defence. In 1998 Tom received a recognition award in Ottawa for introducing team strategies and change management initiatives from the federal government. Prior to 1990 in the private sector he was an administrator and also general manager of a chain of retail stores.

In the academic world Tom is a member of the first cohort (’96) to graduate from RRU in the Master of Arts in Leadership and Training (MALT) program. Tom has been a former chair/president of the Board of Directors of the RRU Alumni Association. In 2006 he received the MBA/RRU professionalism and dedication award. He has also been a faculty member in the Continuing Education Divisions of the University of Victoria and Vancouver Community College. Tom has been an associate faculty member at RRU for over ten years and he has been on the delivery teams for the online courses LEAD 513 (now 563/575), LEAD 516, LEAD 525, LEAD 535. LEAD 562 and LEAD 566 (he is course leader for 516, 525 and 566). He is also a faculty member with the University of Phoenix where he teaches both “ground” and online courses such as: Motivational Psychology, Human Resources Management, Pay and Benefits Management and Benefit & Health and Safety Programs to both human resources undergraduates and MBA program participants. Currently he is working under contract as a subject matter expert for course development for Meritus University (a distance learning university based in New Brunswick).

In the early 1990’s, Tom used a modified version of Myers Briggs when training immigration officers. Tom has been researching the emotional intelligence concept since 1995. He was certified in the use of the Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQi) in 1998. He is also certified in the use of the SDi (Spiral Dynamics instrument). Tom’s RRU emergency preparedness research project was sponsored by the City of Victoria Emergency Social Services Program and the City of Victoria Planning and Fire Departments. He received a recognition award for this work from the City of Victoria and his research was incorporated into the City of Victoria Emergency Plan and this was included on the city web site. He spoke in the legislative assembly before the Select Committee on Public Accounts presenting this research and excerpts were published in the government publication Earthquake Preparedness in BC (1999). His articles on Dynamic Organizations were published in the BC Fire Chief’s Association Newsletter and he has been published in Safety Digest (which is distributed in 70 countries). His work also appeared in the book Leadership: An Anthology by Betsy Symons & Gary Botting. He has written a potential doctoral thesis on the subject of irredentism.
